J. Andrew Shelley
J. Andrew Shelley was raised in Memphis and matured in Massachusetts. Post college he worked jobs in the public and private sectors before landing a position at his first startup.
As that business neared its end, the timing was right. He was experimenting with ways to use this new web thing built on the internet. For the following decade he worked to bring the internet into daily corporate and personal life. It was going to bring us all together, right? Soon he was tasked with the question: "How will GPS, digital wireless, and mobile devices change our world?"
Seeking an answer to that question allowed him to meet the technical visionaries behind companies including Verizon, Siemens, Sony, BMW, Nokia, Motorola, and others no longer with us. May those tech heroes rest in peace. Along the way, he was fortunate to rub shoulders with the creators of the navigation, information, and machine learning systems that guide today's world.
He hosted focus groups with people like you and me. More often than not they asked, "Why would I use a phone for navigation when I already know the way?" Today, he's not much surprised that his children hardly understand how to use a map or remember a phone number. Embracing the technology shaping our new reality led him to work in the mobile, insurance, medical, and cyber security worlds.
Eventually he focused on the social technologies we use to make our organizations better, to do more, and to produce better outcomes. He shifted from asking, "How will tech shape our world?" to "How do we use tech to better get along? How can technology work more for us than against us."
Today, J. Andrew Shelley is helping real people address real problems. One at a time. Understanding that most of us change only when we have to... and only when we are inspired by stories.
